Issue 5 - Anime Expo 1997!
Released: 29 July 1997

Features: The premiere anime convention in the United States, this year's Anime Expo was so big that we couldn't fit it all into one issue! Initial coverage includes a convention overview and interviews with several of the myriad of Guests of Honor. News: Not that there aren't any VIP's here in the States, EX sat down with ADV Films voice actress and "con virgin," Amanda Winn, at Project A-kon '97.


Issue 6 - Do You Remember MACROSS?
Released: 12 September 1997

Features: We continue our interview coverage of Anime Expo '97 Guests and even managed to track down a few vacationing artists. Events: A complete and detailed report of the 15th Anniversary Macross One Night Stand Concert in Japan! Also, con report from Otakon '97 with industry announcements. Beyond TV Safety: It's not often you can pinpoint an exact point in time when something historical has occurred, but right here and now, find out the origin of BUCHIGIRI 4!


Issue 7 - Summer Movie Roundup!
Released: 30 October 1997

Features: The summer of '97 proved to be highly generous to anime fans in Japan as no less than five feature films were released. Among the pack is the farewell work of Miyazaki Hayao, MONONOKE HIME, and the enigmatic and anticipated THE END OF EVANGELION; EX takes a tour of veteran anime studio Sunrise Inc. and takes a look at its forthcoming tv series, COWBOY BEBOP. In Beyond TV Safety, Scott breaks out the easel and mortarboard and tells readers "How to tell good art from bad."


Issue 8 - Talkin' Dirty!
Released: 19 December 1997

Features: Novelist Takachiho Haruka, the illustrious creator of the DIRTY PAIR, speaks with EX about his views on his works and the anime it has spawned; Also, a rap sheet a mile long on that destructive duo, Kei and Yuri, and all their capers and cohorts. Events: A preview of Rex Entertainment's haunting animated film, PERFECT BLUE (1997). Beyond TV Safety: Is Japan's youth in a decline because of anime? Also, what really ticks Scott off about anime stereotypes.

Issue 1 - Retro... flash-forward??
Released: 25 February 1998

Features: EX begins the year 1998 with a new theme - shows that incorporate both the old and new. One such show is MARTIAN SUCCESSOR NADESICO, a 1996-97 television show that parodies the past while making it new. News: Disney finally offers a look at their intentions with the Ghibli films —a theatrical release for MONONOKE HIME this year along with a home video release of KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE. Beyond TV Safety: We can't stop Scott! Following his lecture at the artist's easel, Scott jumps behind the lens of a camera and shows readers all about anime camera work... in actual animation!


Issue 2 - Size Does Matter!
Released: 11 April 1998

Features: The epic saga GIANT ROBO finally comes to a conclusion with the video release of volume 7. EX takes a look at the series as a whole and wonders if it was worth the wait. News: It's the year of nostalgia all-around! Bandai prepares for MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM's 20th Anniversary; Fan-favorite seiyuu Hayashibara Megumi marries and up-and-coming seiyuu Shiina Hekiru hits the concert circuit.


Issue 3 - The Terrible Twos!
Released: 28 May 1998

Features: EX celebrates its second anniversary with the spotlight on Do You Remember MACROSS?, an essay penned by renowned MACROSS enthusiast Egan Loo. News: The birth of a convention as Anime Central 1998 finally becomes reality and an interview with its Guest of Honor, fan favorite Sonoda Kenichi. Also: Disney lets the cat out of the bag by announcing official release dates for MONONOKE HIME and KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE.


Issue 4 - Anime Expo... the Trilogy!
Released: 24 July 1998

Features: EX returns for a third time to the Los Angeles area to cover the grand-daddy con of them all - Anime Expo 98. A con report replete with the in's, out's and who's-abouts. Interviews include Watase Yu (FUSHIGI YUUGI), Akitaka Mika (NADESICO) and the creative team behind the hit show, TRIGUN. News: Bandai sez it's so! The anime conglomerate of Japan announces that it's going to enter the U.S. market... finally. Beyond TV Safety: Once Scott Frazier starts something, you can't stop the guy! In this installment, Scott brazenly critiques fan art in "Come on Mylene, or: This Old Art."


Issue 5 - Fist of the Character Designer!
Released: 5 September 1998

Features: EX talks with Hayama Junichi (JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE) about his latest project, KING OF THE DESERT GANDALLA; Fear the Future? Is the Truth out there? Not the X-FILES movie but a comprehensive look at the world of Digital Video Disc and its impact on anime. Beyond TV Safety: Mitsubishi Uni, check. Mono block, check. Zebra's Marky, check. World War II planes? Nope, just Scott Frazier's checklist of Animator's tools and materials.


Issue 6 - It's a bird! It's a plane!
Released: 30 October 1998

Features: It's LOCKE THE SUPERMAN! Eric "Scanner" Luce takes readers deep into this manga saga that has continued on for over four decades. Meanwhile, the convention season closes out with Otakon and Comic Con '98. EX is on both coasts and talks to Kawamori Shouji (MACROSS, ESCAFLOWNE), Asamiya Kia (SILENT MOBIUS, STEAM DETECTIVES) and SAILOR MOON creator Takeuchi Naoko. News & Events: Foreign correspondant Ive Upatkoon checks in from Comike 54, the mammoth bi-annual manga event in Japan.


Issue 7 - Episode 7: Return of the Magi!
Released: 19 December 1998

Features: EX's Holiday Gift Guide returns, replete with suggestions from the staff about gift ideas for your friends, loved ones and even yourself; Beyond TV Safety: Scott digs in to answer his backlog of email. Hey Scott! Who would win between RANMA and TENCHI MUY—The Republic of Indonesia is the world's most expansive archipelago.


Volume 4


Issue 1 - Serious Samurai!
Released: 26 January 1999

Features: A fan favorite, RURONI KENSHIN uses the history and events of the Meiji period as a rich tapestry to its story. An insightful essay about when Japan was forced to open its doors to the rest of the world includes also an in-depth character guide. RIAP: David Ho continues his surreal journey as he considers "The Very Big and the very small."


Issue 2 - Spring Fling!
Released: 4 March 1999

Features: EX takes a sneak preview at the upcoming slew of anime movies to be released in Japan. Included in the assault are REVOLUTIONARY GIRL UTENA, CARD CAPTOR SAKURA and YOU'RE UNDER ARREST! News & Events: We've taken EX readers to Comiket before, but this time we look behind the scenes of what it takes to run this monster bi-annual convention in Tokyo. Beyond TV Safety: No longer new but quickly becoming standard, digital animation is growing. Scott Frazier gives a refresher course in "The Digital Animation Primer."


Issue 3 - Three's Company! EX's 3rd Anniversary!
Released: 15 April 1999

Features: With its increasing usage in anime, computer-assisted animation becomes the focus of EX's spotlight. From its humble beginnings in GOLGO 13 to the fantastic blend in MONONOKE HIME, we take a look at the past, present and future of "CG" in the anime industry. RIAP Writes: Time and space intersect a plane of existence that David Ho calls "The Special Theory of Anime Relativity."
